Having a "junior moment"

I think I've coined a new term.

J2 borrowed a vehicle for the next 3 weeks (most of which time we'll be out of state on vacation) and promptly locked the keys and his cell phone inside. I get a call from his roommate's cell: "Um, Dad...?"

Naturally, he's 400 miles away. Dad and AAA to the rescue! (that is, after I pay to add him as an associate member. But, it's cheaper than getting a local locksmith.)

It's one of those things that happens to you for the first time, and you remember it from then on.

Like the first time the bank hits you with an overdraft charge and you had enough cash in your pocket to cover the debit card transaction that overdrew you. Oops.

Or like the first time your car gets "booted" and towed and you realize that those signs actually mean what they say. Oops.

Unlike senior moments, it has nothing to do with mental slowdowns or failing memory. It's one of the "3i's" that affect the judgment of the young: innocence, ignorance, or inexperience. It didn't occur to you that "X" would happen, because you had never seen it happen before. And when you're young, if you don't see it... it doesn't exist.

So you chalk it up to being a newbie, shrug your shoulders, and likely don't let it happen again. A first time for everything, you know?

Like locking your keys and cell phone in someone's car when the someone you borrowed it from is in another state. Oops.

I think the boy just had a "junior moment". :)
